Why I Am Running

Safe Schools

Our schools should be a safe environment where our kids can learn and thrive without the fear of violence. Recent events around the Country and even within our schools, highlight we must do everything we can to ensure a safe, learning environment. If elected, I promise to push for a biannual review of our district emergency management/response plan to ensure we are protecting our number one asset, our children. When kids feel safe, they thrive and learn.

Experience Counts

I am running for Lake Travis School Board because as the father of two kids, I want my experience and background to benefit Lake Travis ISD. By investing in our children through public education today; means a more prosperous Lake Travis community tomorrow. I promise to work hard for parents, teachers and the community to ensure our students receive the education they deserve.

Teacher Pay

I am running for Lake Travis School Board because I want our teachers to be paid for the superstar job they perform every day. Like you, I remember those teachers in my past which pushed me to be a better student. These teachers had an enormous impact on my life. I will do everything in my power as a school board member to increase the Teacher Compensation Plan so we can retain and attract the very best teachers our kids deserve.

Your Voice

I am running for Lake Travis School Board because I want to represent you and your family on major education decisions which will have a lasting impact. I promise to be open and responsive to parents, teachers, staff, students, and our community before casting a vote on education matters before the board. I will be your representative on the Lake Travis School Board.

Let Kids be Kids

The education of our children is a top priority of mine. But so is their mental health. A survey administered last May found that many Lake Travis ISD students do not know how to handle stress. It showed they contemplate suicide and self-harm more than other students nationally.

An article from Community Impact reported:

“Out of 720 middle school survey respondents, 117 reported that they had contemplated committing suicide over the past 12 months, 59 reported they had made plans to kill themselves and 30 said they attempted suicide during that time frame. In terms of school pressure, 414 middle school respondents said the stress of school was “too much.”

One way we can help our children with their mental well being, is to not create stressful situations for them. If elected, I support moderating the homework load at the elementary and middle school levels – lets focus on learning and let our kids just be kids.

Our kids do not need to be stressed with so much homework at an early age. Let them come home to be kids and play. Let them come home to dinner with the family instead of homework at the dinner table.

Trustworthy Leader

Finally, I am running for Lake Travis School Board because I want to be a trustworthy district leader for our school staff and community. According to a recent Lake Travis ISD employee survey conducted by the Texas Association of School Boards in June 2015, employee perceptions of district leaders being trustworthy and valuing district employees were at an all-time low. I want to reverse this trend!

About Daniel

I am a native of Austin and understand the challenges our tremendous growth has on our community. As a resident of the Lake Travis community since 2010, my wife and I started our family here and have 2 kids, Madelyn (4.5) and Dalton (1.5). Our kids will soon be enrolled in school and experience our wonderful, dedicated teachers who care greatly about our children.

My professional career and volunteer service have prepared me well for the Lake Travis School board. As the legislative director for the Texas Association of REALTORS for nearly 20 years, I have seen first-hand how important a quality public education has on our state and local economy. A strong, successful school district absolutely has an impact on property values and the quality of life our community enjoys.

I am also an executive board member for the Boy Scouts of America – Capital Area Council. In my role on the Executive Board, I understand how education can impact the lives of our children to make the right decisions in their life. More importantly, I understand the importance of quality role models which can have a positive influence on our students.

Academically, I earned an MBA from St. Edward’s University and a B.A. from Southwest Texas State University. As a product of our public education system, we must do everything we can to ensure our kids receive the best possible education in a safe environment.

I look forward to having conversations with you about your priorities for the Lake Travis School District.
